A Mouse Called Julian by Joe Todd-Stanton

Now for anyone not in the know, Joe Todd-Stanton is a bit bloody brilliant.  He has already created amazing stories such as Arthur and the Golden Rope and The Secret of Black Rock which is quite a track record to hold.  A Mouse Called Julian is a delightful addition to enhance it.

Unlike the other more hi-octane adventures mentioned, A Mouse Called Julia is heart-warming tale that is so well-crafted that it will be enjoyed by children for many years to come.

Julian is a mouse who likes to keep himself to himself. He lives by himself. He explores by himself. He dines by himself. And all the while he is extremely content. But much like life is, Julian’s world turns upside down because of someone sticking his nose in…literally.  Sharing this story with an audience is a sheer joy.  The gasps at the shock ‘twist’ near the end are brilliant to see.

As an artist, Joe Todd-Stanton is one of the best currently working in children’s literature.  Each page is filled with vibrant images that are a feast for the eyes.  It reminds me of the borrowers on some pages as Julian collects a range of objects to create his perfect home.

Now for the teacher bit.  The underground world that Julian calls home is a fantastic looking glass to explore the whole host of animals which live in burrows and tunnels. For younger children learning about animals and their habitats, this book is ideal.

A delightful tale that may just be a modern classic.
